If they wanted to have someone else lined up, they needed to put them in the running during the kavanaugh selection process, so the press would have picked them up a year prior. Trump was in a strategically difficult spot with only 1 month to get someone on the Supreme Court, after Ginsberg passed away.
But yah, I find people who adopt foreigners super weird and possibly neurotic in some way. It is an illogical / irrational thing to do, and probably stems from some sort of virtue signalling or in the case of European Americans all adopting Africans, seems like it is some sort of deep internal guilt complex.
