The civil war wasn't about slavery.

It was about the states ability to sever from the federal compact. Slavery was just the easiest way to get people to die for each side.

Correct. States joined the union with the understanding that they could leave if they so desired.

the fight for slavery was mostly a discussion between elites. Soldiers on both sides didn't really care about the issue.

Although there were opposing views even in the Union States,[28][29] most Northern soldiers were mostly indifferent on the subject of slavery

In particular, Southerners feared a repeat of "the horrors of Santo Domingo", in which nearly all white people – including men, women, children, and even many sympathetic to abolition – were killed after the successful slave revolt in Haiti.

Slavery is seen as the main topic of contention in the civil war, because in modern day America, racial conflict is made the center of everything.

So one side was fighting to keep slaves. And one side was fighting to free slaves. But it wasn’t about slaves. Wow

No, one side was trying to leave the union and the other was trying to force them to stay.

It's is like saying Brexit is about Muslims.

It's not, but that's how they got the population fired up.

In <75 years Muslims will be calling for reparations (sharia law) there too.

The secession movement began literally a week after the constitution was ratified. The nullification crisis concerning import taxes placed on South Carolina occurred decades before the fight over slavery which at its core is the fight for the right to secede from the union entirely.
