After purchasing the KJV, get a John McArthur study bible.

Just so you know none of the english bibles contain a perfect translation of the original manuscripts, because it's just not possible, but I agree with the majority about the KJV being the best.

English Standard Version is both closest to original languages and fairly easy to read.

The fact that you read it is more important than what version. Also, the Bible is 100% free online, so you can see what version you feel lead by God to use.

Check out Isaiah in the Bible. It’s my favorite chapter because it exemplifies the glory of God.

Get a King James version that also has modern version for comparison.

The KJV is lovely but can be tough as our language IS drifting from.the English of the time. NASB, ESV, NKJV are good modern translations to start with. Don't buy into "KJV only."

I do like to read NIV, but when I question the translation, I will double check with the KJV.

God's words were delivered to us in Hebrew and Greek. The original words have been miraculously preserved for millenia to a degree that no other ancient text is, so that we have access to create the best translations in every language for all of mankind.

KJV-onlyism is a borderline cult that- as you seem to be doing- suggests anyone not using the KJV is an affront to God or maybe not a believer.

The KJV is not the be-all and end-all. It is a good translation. It has some errors. All translations do. Eventually the dialect of English it uses will be a foreign language to living English speakers. It is already prohibitively difficult for many. Devotion to a translation should not allow us to create a barrier to entry.

"I'm not saying you're not a Christian... but you might not be worshipping the true God."

This is not sound, Pedes. Jesus is the Word of God and He never spoke a syllable of English. We are all operating under the handicap of not being native speakers of two ancient languages. Every decent version has its advantages in increasing understanding, and comparing them is valuable. It's not about comfort or suiting your desires. No version tells you to carry on sinning or that Jesus is not Lord.

The NIV is not my favorite, to be sure.

But it does not "refer" to Jesus as Lucifer. It calls them both "morning star." Did you know the NIV, and all translations, say that the Pharisees are gods?

See, it's almost like scripture is nuanced and more complex than little gotcha moves. If you think any sincere person is going to come away from the NIV thinking Jesus is Lucifer you have a screw loose.

I will say a quick prayer for you and then go on with my day. This is not edifying.

I second that KJV is the truest translation, however, I personally found many parts tough to follow simply because we don’t use that style of English anymore. If you go with KJV great but get a more modern study manual with it. Otherwise the ESV and NIV are both easier to read and can be cross checked against KJV when needed. I have both KJV and NIV but find myself reading NIV much more because it’s simply MUCH easier to understand. I feel it’s more important to understand more (NIV) than reading through and having to reread sentences multiple times because the language is old school English (KJV). At the end of the day though, you can’t go wrong and reading the Bible in any version is better than not.

As another user said, pick a few chapters and read them online for free using a few different versions and see which you like best. God bless you my friend.

Our forefathers believed in Divine Providence, but God worked through men. “God helps those who help themselves,” Ben Franklin wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac

I will send you the KJV and the NKJV.

PM me with my same username on reddit with your email and ill get them to you.

The NKJV clears up the Thou's and other language shifts without changing any meaning. You should have both.

If you are new to reading the Bible, I would recommend the new living translation for readability.

The YouVersion Bible app is free and doesn’t spam you with ads and has about every English translation including the KJV and NLT. and other modern ones like the ESV and CSB. Ultimately it’s a lot more important that you read the Bible then which version. you use). Pick what fits you and stick with it. The YouVersion app also includes audio bible for most of the popular versions.

There are some good podcasts that read the Bible for you in daily doses such as the daily audio Bible (http://feeds.feedburner.com/dailyaudiobible.xml) and the chronological version (http://feeds.feedburner.com/dailyaudiobiblechronological.xml).

Hey friend...see a lot of KJV references here. Going to add a voice against that and here's why. A lot of people consider it to be like an "original", which of course it isn't. It is a translation just like others. It is poetic but hard to understand because it was the 1700s. So KJV is beautiful but when we read it we are often translating twice to understand.

I find that more modern translations do a better job than I personally would to convey meaning. So O like NIV, ESB, and NLT.

KJV also has many issues I strongly consider to be translation errors after doing a lot of work.

WELCOME! God is good, and Jesus is amazing. Please don't hesitate to reach out and ask any questions, either here or via PM. Any time. Find a good bible-believing church near you and get connected. Happy to help with that search.

For an online taste of the NIV, use this: https://www.biblegateway.com/versions/New-International-Version-NIV-Bible/

I absolutely LOVE proverbs and pslams in this version vs other versions, and Isaiah...so poetic and beautiful.

The best version is the one you will read! My preference is ESV as it is the most faithful modern translation. I also like NASB. If you find these too hard, try NIV, NLT or others.

imo, If you understand the message it doesn't matter so much what bible so long as you read it. KJV is the Gold standard but it can be difficult to read and follow.

I would also strongly recommend a good study Bible to help explain some of the more difficult or dense subjects that are throughout the texts, something like the John McArthur study Bible.

There are also some great YouTube channels on the subject, these are some of my favorites.

Kjv is tough reading. I recommend the ESV or the message. Cross reference to the kjv when unsure of meaning, its the OG. Don't get caught in the weeds, its ALL about Jesus. Dont split hairs yet. Start with the gospel of John Then Acts, then Genesis The devil will attack. You're on the right path God bless you.

Keep several of them! You can use one main one but have at least one more literal translation and one more meaning oriented translation. When going through a passage, periodically check the other translation (especially if your having a hard time understanding it). This will allow you to somewhat circumvent the shortcomings of the translation you choose since all English translations are imperfect.

I prefer the NIV version because I find it easier to read. But whatever version you choose will be good. God bless you!

I have the Orthodox Study bible, a complete analysis of the bible through the lens of Orthodox Christianity. But KJ is boss.

1
seaside_dreams 1 point ago +1 / -0

May I humbly suggest you look into reading the Bible along with Orthodox commentaries.

For example, Blessed Theophalct and Arch Bishop Averky will go far beyond simple reading. You'll get a deep understanding of the gospels and what they mean and don't mean.

Please try to remember, the Bible is but one part of the fullness of the ancient faith. People would have had the church and liturgical worship, the cycle of the year the commemorate the resurrection etc. It is a modern idea to have a man alone with a Bible figuring it out for himself.

Prayerfully I hope you find what you seek. I come from an Orthodox perspective. It is an ever depending faith.

God bless you.

Are you talking about The Message?

1
panic86 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not specifically. I always rely on and have faith in KJV. I have used many versions and translations when studying to get an understanding of what other men think, but I always consider KJV the proper English translation. And while I believe the KJV is solely sufficient, a person will learn much faster when the KJV is read and studied with a proper Biblical dictionary and a concordance. (I use Strongs). After those two study guides, understanding history is also helpful in studying the Bible. By that I mean understanding ancient customs and cultures can bring needed context to our ancient text.

The Message is a paraphrase, not a translation. It can be helpful for beginners especially since our definition of words has changed quite a bit over two thousand years.

I am not a prophet, preacher or proselytizer - just a guy interested in The Word of God. Be well.
