As a GenX'r that grew up in the 70's and 80's, I concur.

jtt888 55 points ago +56 / -1

It was before all the pussies took over. No decade was perfect and there were still leftists out there, but I can clearly remember the love America vibe, the patriotic Olympics in LA, Springsteen with an album cover of American stripes, girls being actually happy, and real optimism.

I think early 90s had good music also. As a fellow GenX'r I believe we grew up and came of age during the best of times. We had music from the 60s',70,80s and early 90s to enjoy. We saw the cable TV increase our viewing options. The video game boom of early 80s. Atari, Coleco-vision, Commodore 64. And we still played outside stickball, football and BMX biking. Star Wars came out in 1977, TESB in 1980. I could go on and on. I wish I could live 1973-1994 over and over again.

80’s were also a time of consumerism going into hyper inflation which we’ve never recovered from.

2016TrumpMAGA 0 points ago +1 / -1

You could not be more wrong.

Inflation was historically low in the 80s. From 1983 on it was 3% to 4%. Not as low as today, but low.

https://inflationdata.com/articles/inflation-cpi-consumer-price-index-1980-1989/

The 1970s, on the other hand.

https://inflationdata.com/articles/inflation-cpi-consumer-price-index-1970-1979/

Thanks Jimmy Fucking Carter, third worst President in history.

1
Djt2029 1 point ago +1 / -0

I’m not talking about monetary inflation. I’m using the term in the increase of consumerism synonymously.

1
neurojerk 1 point ago +1 / -0

It’s basically the origins to the present day where every kid needs every new iPhone release etc

0
2016TrumpMAGA 0 points ago +1 / -1

I would like to beat your high school English and History teachers senseless - further senseless.

The 80s only seemed like unprecedented consumerism because they followed the Jimmy Carter years of the late 70s. Consumerism was no more rampant than in the 50s and 60s - maybe less so.

4
Paul_Revere 4 points ago +5 / -1

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Greatest time ever.

That sums up the phenomonon. People always think that the era in which they grew up was the "greatest time ever." It's human nature.

4
TheStableGenius 4 points ago +4 / -0

No, it can also just be an objective fact. If I have to walk by junkies, homeless, and crazy people EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. DAY. Then my love for how it used to back then (without all of this) is not because of some human nature cherrypicking what I grew up with, it's totally normal and I'd be 100% correct because it was objectively better.

You can't seriously sit there and tell me that having junkies everywhere or that aggressive pessimistic people at every turn are better and more healthy, and that my point of view is just wrong. That's ridiculous.

24
mbarnar 24 points ago +24 / -0

Our current cycle took root in the 60s, we just got a nice little reprieve from it in the 80s

7
Sumarongi 7 points ago +7 / -0

Well you could say it goes back 100 years to the Bolsheviks, then the Fascists and Communists

But at least 60’s radicals paid lip service to concepts such as ‘freedom’

1
ThePowerOfPrayer 1 point ago +1 / -0

think about all this shit we know is going on now..it was going on BEFORE the internet but we had NO idea and NO remedy as a people, as a species, as free men.

only with the advent of the internet did we realize we were never free. and now we have a chance to change that.

1
Sumarongi 1 point ago +1 / -0

I could see it back then... but it was pretty confined to college and ‘alternative’ culture. Now it’s everywhere

18
Sumarongi 18 points ago +18 / -0

90’s were also the start of endless bailouts...LTCM.

It seems like a good decade because we we coasting off the 80’s and just ‘won the cold war’. In reality it’s when we let the foot off the gas, and started out coasting into the Hells air of the post 9/11 world

6
DebbieinDallas 6 points ago +6 / -0

“we were coasting off the 80’s” . Reagan brought down inflation, people had jobs again, Texas oil was booming. GHW Bush was Reagan’s 3rd term. He lied to us “No New Taxes” and then he got rolled by the Dems. That gave us Bill the rapist Clinton from whom we were saved only by Newt and the 1994 Tea Party Congress. But Clinton still sowed the seeds for the housing financial crisis of 2007-2008. And we have been fucked eversince.

4
thelastlast 4 points ago +4 / -0

yup. also when our society became EXTREMELY litigious, allowing Nature's Tattletales to reign supreme. look where they've brought us.

1
empiretc 1 point ago +2 / -1

yep. that is when the internet started to take hold..........

4
Sumarongi 4 points ago +4 / -0

I don’t look as that as a bad thing. The internet is great in so many ways for dissemination of information. It was the rise of Brietbart and the ability for anyone to take on the mainstream media.

It’s the stranglehold of the tech oligarchs and the censorship that is disturbing.

Made the Internet Great Again

5
empiretc 5 points ago +5 / -0

it was the rise of social networks that corrupted the internet. If the lunch meat called spam became the catchword for a depersonalized email message, then social networking should be known as soylent green!

The internet would be great if it wasn't for that. but, for a lot of the ignorant majority, that is all they use.

The 80s were good times. To tech companies. Kids actually went outside and got exercise. Anyone with pink hair was treated like the freak they were. I miss those days.

10
redgreenyellowblu 10 points ago +10 / -0

It was probably even fun for the pink paired people, goths, etc. They got to actually enjoy being angry at society for staring at them instead of just being smug for being trendy like now.

4
THELEADERSOFMEN 4 points ago +4 / -0

It was fun. It took balls to be an artfag. Now it’s safer than milk. And you get automatically assumed to be a leftist, which is an insult. Oh also it was much more creative and brainy...you had to make up your own outfits out of goodwill or whatever, or be brave enough to go into the sketchy part of town to the alternative or ethnic stores. Now there’s a Hot Topic in every mall and the general starter pack mentality IQ is below room temperature.

Nobody was racist in the 80's like at all. Race relations were probably at an all time high. Everyone was civil and mostly happy. An amazing time.

But now, race relations have probably never been worse! Movements like BLM are destroying race relations. Causing division, resentment and anger on both sides. We have the commie left to thank for this. Very bad times ahead.

8
Centipedealicious 8 points ago +8 / -0

People were racist in the 80’s. But it was more like a poser racism. When we actually interacted, we got along.

4
BorisWave 4 points ago +4 / -0

I think today is worse than the 80's.

This might just be my perception. But race relations are at an all time low today. In my opinion worse than the 80's.

1
Centipedealicious 1 point ago +3 / -2

I honestly don’t think that’s true in many ways. I think that the media and slimy politicians and race grifters want us to believe that it is worse. But in my everyday life and conversations with others, average people of all races get along just fine. It is just that it gets shoved in our faces so much that we think it’s worse than it is.

Then again, the white liberal snowflakes telling black people how to feel don’t help either...

16

5
Qbaby 5 points ago +5 / -0

Lots of late, late, late nights. Had a college friend from Peru ... times were very different!

14
StaryHickory 14 points ago +14 / -0

80s was great 90s was mostly nice until the very end. It is amazing how much easier it was to just live back then. The more we have "progress" the harder it is to live and the more "crises" we have. Ordinary living has been turned into some kind of devastating torture by mentally unstable lunatics.

Race relations were much better in the 80s and 90s. Now after the first black president we have a "race problem". These are all manufactured crises to separate you from your wealth and free will.

Anyone who has lived long enough to remember what life was like before all this craziness can attest to that.

5
Centipedealicious 5 points ago +5 / -0
