Okay, this is my obsession. The real crime here is this quote: “So these books are on pause while we listen and learn and read what is currently out there also written by award-winning BIPOC without the trope of the white savior stories or books that are considered ‘classics’ because white gatekeepers at one time decided what would be considered classic.”
Characterizing the books in question as white savior stories, claiming they're only classics because of white gatekeepers, and only considering replacements because of the skin of their authors are what is destroying our education system.
A curriculum only has, like, 200 books on it. Changing the curriculum does not qualify as banning books, unless you start calling every book ever written, except for 200, as banned. Focus on the bullshit, unfairly administered requirements, not what books meet the requirements.
I've been doing this for two years. It's one of the reasons I buy a lot of political stuff; it's not that I can't read most of the info for free it's that I want there to be some small chance that future generations can find out there were alternate opinions even here in the dark ages.
Especially dictionaries
And old history books, especially US history.
