Our economy is many times more robust than theirs, especially in the medium term, just because of the overhead they have.... and that's just sitting as we sit today... Factor in some sanctions, which would absolutely come from every direction if anything even close to popped off or they simply pushed too far with the stuff you're talking about, and they would be super duper fucked in a matter of 24 months or less...
You are correct about them not trying to fight conventional warfare though, but I don't give a shit what newfangled type of war they think they have created - it will always inevitably end in the same place. The only major change when viewing it through the timeline scope would be the amount of time each escalation lasts and how long the overall escalations last before you do end up back into an advanced, but still broadly conventional, war.
Obama did hurt our military of course and, yes, obviously we could start going in that direction again.... but a lot of people just simply don't understand how much distance and space there is in between us and even the next overall most powerful military in the world.... We're not just talking about the type of weapons they have or the amount of them they have or the amount of warm bodies they have -- it's absolutely every category combined.... There may be countries that catch up to us closely in a certain category here or there, but when you combine them all to a total score, it's not even fucking close... I think a lot of people have this unconscious fantasized version where we're all set up on a bar graph and those other countries are just catching up to the USA's bar faster and faster, but on paper and in reality, you would probably need an extra piece of paper because our bar is gonna print off the page...
The USA always loves to join someone else's war and save the day, or at least give the extra kick to push it in our collective favor, but what we didn't like at all was being proactively and preemptively attacked ourselves by a major government... So they made damn sure after all that was said and done that the likelihood of that happening again on that scale, directly and openly from another major world power, was almost zero. This is, of course, what helped give birth to exactly what you're talking about with the unconventional warfare though, becausee that ended up being just about the only way that any entity or world power country could even dream of attacking us without self-annihilation. They absolutely have to use any unconventional method they could come up with, because attacking us directly again like Pearl Harbor would be an absolute death sentence for any nation today....
Obviously that doesn't go to the other extreme either, saying that we would be unscathed. It would be a catastrophe unlike anything this planet has seen since the extinction of the dinosaurs, but that doesn't change what the result would be for whatever country was so brave and/or stupid.
