Be cautious. Go directly to his site to donate. You maybe targeted with spearphishing with offers you didn't request. Give, but give smart.

Is that official? I've given before. I thought that's how they found me.
My work makes me go through cyber security training every year. I now know the difference between phishing and spearphishing and all the different ways companies get hacked. If I don't seek them out, I just assume I'm being targeted.
