You can pick up a NEW Hi-Point 9mm for UNDER $200, or used for next to nothing. You can buy them in .40 S&W and .45 ACP for just a bit more. They are big, ugly, heavy, and don't have the best trigger, but a pretty durable.
I'd recommend spending the 50-100 bucks extra for something if you can afford it, but if you can't, or are looking to purchase SEVERAL, they DO work.
The only thing I'd say is if you are interested in a handgun, and not one you want in particular, but something you feel you NEED and need like NOW... I'd probably avoid 9mm and .380 if possible. Both of those ammo types are next to IMPOSSIBLE to find right now. Like, I think I've seen it in stock once in the last 5 weeks.
Got a buddy with a .40 HiPoint pistol he bought when he was rather poor, and it's about the ugliest damn thing I've seen. It shoots great as long as it's greased, though.
I've got one of their older 9mm carbines and that thing has never given me any problems in the years I've had it.
They are ugly, heavy, and massive, but they definitely do work and can take a beating. I certainly not a fan of the handguns, but I actually don't hate the carbine. In fact, I find that one kinda neat.
They're also a bitch to break down/field strip. They're a good budget option, but highly recommend spending just a little bit more and getting something easier to maintain, like you said.
Just FYI...
