Grow TFU. Knives out, people get cut. It is what it is. Should have taken his knife away and given it back to him, hard, up the ass.
I can't think of a self defense tactic that doesn't suggest neutralizing a knife before punching. Get hold of that arm and stabbing becomes far less likely. A blind guy can swing that thing around.

Well..Being cut is different than being stabbed, but I mean you know.

No, more than likely he assessed really quickly that his best chance to AVOID getting stabbed, and avoid other people getting stabbed, was getting involved.
Smart people don't actively work to get themselves stabbed.

Anyone who pulls a knife when outnumbered is a complete fool. Better to run or fight back with fists only.
As my cqc instructor used to say. If you're in a knife fight you're going to get stabbed. Don't panic and stab the other guy more
