"Was it hot enough to melt it? No." Molten steel can be seen flowing from the building before it fell, and molten steel was found in pockets of the wreckage. So yes, something needed to be hot enough to melt steel.

Someone else mentioned the thermite reaction. Aircraft are made of aluminum. The impact pulverized enough of the frame to form a dust, powder, or other small particles. The fuel burned hot enough to begin the reaction, and the product of the reaction is molten iron. This could account for the claim.
