I'm in academia, and I honestly (at the 5 schools I've been at) have never met a professor that demands being called "doctor ____" (fwiw, this includes 2 state universities, and an ivy league). If anything, it was mocked just as much as we're mocking it here. However, being in education, I did run into a lot of k-12 educators and principles, who had Ph.Ds, and demanded to be called "Dr. ____"; I just really never see it in academia/post-secondary education (and I'm as big a critic of academia, critical theory, etc, as it gets, and will take any and every opportunity to slam them. In fact, I'm working on a book exposing everything, largely from everything I've documented in my time here for work and as a student — since 2007). This is a rare defense from me, but something I at least wanted to comment on, because it is widely mocked. Most professors even ask students to just call them by their first name and not even be called "Professor [last name]"
to me it seems the real Dr.'s that deserve the respect have the humility to not demand being called a doctor whereas the fake ones want to be called a dr.
Kinda like how theres a bunch of guys claiming to be SEALs but real SEALs don't tell anyone that they are
Absolutely, in the case that it is demanded, it's usually from someone, like Jill, who has a doctorate in some liberal arts or humanities field. I'm finishing up a Ph.D myself and will never ask to be called "doctor" (just as I currently don't ask anyone to call me "master" lol. Though I kinda want to more just because it's humorous). That said, while these people do exist, they are the minority (at least in the academy/post-secondary ed. Most professors would mock anyone that wants that label used, and I really only hear it used ceremoniously, during graduation ceremonies, etc). You'll find this even just in watching youtube videos with professors (watch anything with Jordan Peterson; no "doctor." Even more liberal ones, like Brett Weinstein, etc; no "doctor." Again, of course there are exceptions, but most don't ask to be called such). Definitely notice it a lot more outside academia, though, where you find people demanding to be called "doctor," because they have a Ph.D (again, noticed it most often in k-12, typically with principles, superintendents, etc).
It's just very bizarre. I'm not saying it never happens, but between all the schools I've gone to or worked at in ~13 years, and all the colleagues I've worked with, I can speak for at least 40-50 institutions across the country, and the general trend is asking students to call you by first name, or "Professor ____." Only now, now that I'm working in medical education (and therefore with actual doctors/MDs) is the "doctor" title being used fairly often (and even many of them would prefer not to be called "doctor" unless in a clinical setting).
At my university the only people who get Ed doctorates are admins looking to get promoted, never taught anything to anyone in their life and want to feel superior to faculty by also being ‘dr’ and then boss them around. Most Ed docs are in ‘Ed leadership’ ie running an admin unit.
My PhD is in economics, I have never asked anyone to call me ‘dr’, students call me prof or my name, the admins with Ed docs ALWAYS demand to be called doctor.
Hmm... looking at your username... I doubt it, but I wonder if I ever either worked with you, or had you as a professor lol. Working at the business school in one of the NH colleges I’ve worked at was honestly the only halfway decent experience I’ve had in academia. Professors (most, anyway) were at least rational and knew better than to discuss politics in the classroom in any kind of partisan/biased/ideological way. Every other program I’ve been a part of... not so much
I had a history professor with a PhD and he never mentioned it. The guy would teach entire classes, hour long lectures while answering some specific questions, without a single note.
The guy would show up in jeans and sandals with a marker for a whiteboard. Best professor I ever had
I had a high school principal who would immediately correct you if you didn't address him as "Doctor", since he was a "Doctor of Education." I wanna hate, but I don't blame him either KEK
There were a couple of teachers in my elementary school and my mom had to explain to me why they went by "Dr." even though they weren't real doctors. It totally blew my mind.
I've had several professors who don't care about the title. Most of them just wanted to be addressed with their first names. I've had a couple that asked for Dr or Professor. But it's not as bad as yall are saying. I go to a prestigious school, not trying to sound uppity lol just giving some cred to my claim.
I had professors with doctorates, but they never called themselves doctor. lol
thats a rarity, once they get the phd they demand recognition.
I am an astrophysicist with a PhD.
Never once have I demanded anybody call me "Doctor." Then again, I am a based and decent human being, not a turboliberal faggot.
Turboliberal Faggot will now be my go to when shit talking them. A burn that rings throughout the cosmo's.
Take it with you in your journeys.
Use it privately, use it publicly, use it on a plane, use it on a train, use it on a bus, use it while you cuss, use it loudly, use it proudly, simply and strongly exclaim
HEY YOU, RETARD, YOU ARE A TURBOLIBERAL FAGGOT!
Yeah but that's a real degree
I would like to see this portrayed as a cartoon! 😂
Just made this. It is a smoothbrain turboliberal faggot: https://i.maga.host/rrwgmlG.png
Username checks out
I lurked on the commie site for four years, but finally created an account here back in February. Glad to be on board.
Awesome username!
Thanks! It came to me in a moment after .win was created and I had to make sure I was the one to get it.

Until they sign the book deal.
Not in my institutions, we got lectures for being disrespectful when not using proper titles.

Yup, that sounds about right.

Makes me wish I was back in undergrad
Not right now you don’t, fully online classes.

Doctorate is just a type of degree.
You can be a doctor of medicine, or even a doctor of oppressed black lesbian immigrant studies.
Doctorate my homework!
The man performed life-saving ink replacement surgery on his office printer. Show some respect for our frontline workers, the real heroes.

It’s titles. Tenured Prof > PhD Doctor.
Lot of history phds work at Starbucks
“why does your name tag say ‘Dr’?”
My vice principal in HS was an Ed.D. and insisted everyone call her doctor. Laughable looking back at how egotistical she was.
I once worked with a woman who had the last name of Docktor.
We called her Dr.
Did you know that all Lawyers are Doctors?
