I fought in GWOT & count myself lucky apart from the usual knee & back issues from humping loads up & down the mountains in Afghanistan, l got out relatively unscathed. However, with the movie still to this day l have not watched the starts beach landing & can not watch the hand combat up the stairs scene.
The Pacific is underrated IMO.Our Veterans group did a exploration/diving tour of many of the sites ( the Mariana Islands & PNG) 8 years ago that was fantastic, the amount of gear/wreckage still left was amazing, stuff like Sherman Tanks still sitting on reefs ,plane wrecks etc, unfortunately illegal Chinese scrap metal thieves have stripped most of it now apparently.
Another underrated depiction of real combat is The Thin Red Line, the prep scenes before the bunker assaults & aftermath is amazing.
