The Pope does not have temporal power except in Vatican City State. He doesn't have any say in civic matters in the United States, except in matters of faith and morals.
Catholics live by the principles of our faith, as directed by prudence and the other virtues. The popes are our pastors, not our kings. (Unless we live in Vatican City State, I guess.)
If the pope oversteps his bounds, and speaks on matters that are supposed to left to laypeople to decide according to their own prudence, it's perfectly Catholic to ignore the pope. (Or our moms and dads, or our bishops, or whatever.)
I ain't catholic. I am Christian first, American second, and son of my father third. My only leadership consists of the Father, my President, and my earthly father in that order.
Speaking as a Catholic, I think a lot of people--both Catholic and non-Catholic--get confused on what authority the pope has. The whole "infallibility" thing only matters when 1) he's talking only about religious matters 2) he speaks "ex cathedra", meaning from the seat of the Vatican on behalf of the whole Church. That means that bishops have to convene, doctrines are drawn up, yadda yadda. In the past 2,000 years, papal infallibility has been used twice officially and about six times unofficially. And it's mainly been for stuff like denouncing a splinter sect of Christianity or what have you.
If the pope says something in his encyclicals or writings or whatever, you can read it if you want--or don't read it if you don't want to--and go about your life. He's just a man like the rest of us. Prone to sin, prone to being wrong. There have been plenty of way worse popes than Francis over the centuries. You pray for them that their intentions are good, guided by God, and that they don't lead Christians astray. But aside from that, you do your own thing.
Besides, seems to me there was once a pretty famous saying about "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s."
