After playing Cyberpunk 2077 this week, the idea of brain chips is both exciting and horrifying. We all like to think we are the main character using our cyber implants to ping enemies, turn off other peoples vision, and having HUD auto translate every language on the planet in real time.
In reality we are the guy who gets his brain hacked and becomes a vegetable.
Exciting and horrifying is right. For years I looked forward to new technology, and especially full immersion VR. These days though, it all sounds like a nightmarish trap leading to things like...being tortured in VR, Inception style, where years take place in minutes. I always knew it had the potential to be dangerous, but I figured the risk would be minimized.
Last few years have really shattered most of my hopes for that kind of immersive, invasive tech to be anywhere near safe. Same goes for my hopes of a future with advanced AI in daily life/gaming. Was relying on Google for that.

I would certainly be hesitant to put a computer chip that could affect my brain in my head, especially if it could be affected by external forces. But what if it's proven to be useful and effective, and you'll be left behind without it? Might have to make that decision someday.

The "chip" he talks about is a fix for some neurological problems that people have, including narcolepsy and seizures. Current treatments we have are simply shocking the deep brain with electricity. Crude and inelegant, even if it somewhat does the job. Elon's fix is brilliant.
If this tech can also be used to connect us to the internet and allow us to make voip calls and shit, well... Technology evolves. How many times can we trend between large screens and small screens on cell phones before someone comes up with something new?
