I remember being anxious to call a girl hoping her family doesn't answer. Or people on another phone line in the house pick up the phone and catch them trying to listen in.

They would unscrew the mouthpiece and take out the mic. Then you couldn't hear the eavesdropping

If you had good ears,, you could still here the click when the other receiver clicked on.

Now who remembers wireless landline telephones?

Always heard the click. Then with cordless ones you could hang up your sisters call by jumping the prongs on the base with a spoon.
