Thank you for giving an old timer a laugh on this grim, confusing morning.

Just tending my memes. It's not much, but it's honest work.

56
AsaNisiMAGA 56 points ago +57 / -1

It's appreciated. Even in the toughest times, maybe especially then, it's important to remember to say thank you. ❤

Levelup 32 points ago +32 / -0

Wholesome TDW. I love you so much pedes. I needed this too!

27
AsaNisiMAGA 27 points ago +27 / -0

I will never let them take or break those parts of who I am. None of us should. ❤

25
prayinpede 25 points ago +25 / -0

Well if the intetnet gets wacked we're gonna have to bring back webrings

17
BadManOrange 17 points ago +17 / -0

Wow, now you're really taking me back. I forgot that webrings even existed in those days.

15
MaxineWaters4Prez 15 points ago +15 / -0

My angelfire page has a counter, an animated background, and a midi loop playing.

6

Use the Netscape <blink> tag a lot.

Iteachfuckingscience 3 points ago +3 / -0

My aol page had a lot of Simpson’s gags on it. They’re copyrighted

3
WikkiWikki420 3 points ago +3 / -0

You should come to my city over at geocities.com

3
True_Grits 3 points ago +3 / -0

In my day Geocities had city names and numbered addresses not fancy usernames for your URL. Then Yahoo took over and screwed everything up.

We were happy to have 56k dial up not like the spoiled fiber multiple gbps millennials and their fancy auto generated memes (we worked a day in MS Paint just to insert some text in a picture that took us an hour to download).

Now get off my digital lawn!

3
WikkiWikki420 3 points ago +3 / -0

Lol.

I honestly can't believe people still think 56k dial up was slow. I was stuck with a 300baud modem before finally 14.4k dial up. Which is to say it was a huge upgrade for the BBS's that I would frequent just to play the text based game L.O.R.D. I mean, sitting there waiting for it to display each character to form a word and then a sentence could be quite gripping at times.

In my day, you didn't complain about not being able to get things fast enough, you complained about even being able to connect to prodigy and praying that nobody would kick you offline by calling your number or a random person in your house picking up the phone.

Now get off my digital universe. =)

11
bobobob 11 points ago +11 / -0

I'm all for it. Let's reset things back to the 90s internet and kick all the normies off. The internet was much better when there was a barrier to entry. We can make this site into a usenet group.

3
prayinpede 3 points ago +3 / -0

We should have a backup like that. Is icq still around?

3
TrudeauIsAsshoe 3 points ago +3 / -0

I'm still waiting for there to be a TDW irc channel.

3
DroolingElmo 3 points ago +3 / -0

We all miss that dial up sound....

Already been using duckduckgo for about a few months. Going through the process of finding alternative services to google. My New Year's resolution is to have google completely out of my life by the end of January.

8
mickeydee 8 points ago +9 / -1

I tried duckduckgo but found it to be extremely lacking compared to googles

3

That's odd, I've been using Qwant and haven't found anything lacking. I don't even use Google at all anymore. Haven't for more than a year.

google >> bing (i know... could do better... never really liked ddg)

gmail >> protonmail

google docs >> pages (ios)

never used google phones or any google hardware whatsoever

never used google maps

i dont understand what google offers that puts it in the same league as the other tech giants.

4
Hey_thisnomypee 4 points ago +4 / -0

I'm using brave for everything on my android phone lately. Gonna transition to protonmail and alternative video services.

Currently researching /e/project. It's a google free Android distribution.

7
mickeydee 7 points ago +7 / -0

Fuck this one went over my head. Anybody care to explain?

9
LoneStarDangler [S] 9 points ago +9 / -0

Alta Vista was the no 1 search engine before google exploded onto the scene.

3
Suture 3 points ago +3 / -0

There was a clone created for hacking/security and similar IT related matters very close after Altavista was up, called https://astalavista.box.sk/ it's still there too.

Those days were fun, not gonna lie

6
DrinkMoreLibTears 6 points ago +6 / -0

Search it Duck Duck Go. It's an old search engine from the 90s. I'd never heard of it either.

3
LeftistsAreInsane 3 points ago +3 / -0

Now that makes me feel old.

3
mickeydee 3 points ago +3 / -0

Thanks guys, When i started using the net back in the early/mid 2000s google was already a thing.

I for one would welcome a Netscape and AOL resurgence

10
John_Smallberries 10 points ago +10 / -0

I can send you a CD that will give you 500 free hours of AOL. After that it's only $19.99 month (taxes and fees are extra).

4
knnbccb 4 points ago +4 / -0

Netscape's descendant is Seamonkey.

https://www.seamonkey-project.org/

4
Suture 4 points ago +4 / -0

There's a bit more behind that. Netscape had an internet suite of tools called Netscape communicator but it never really caught on, this is what Seamonkey built on. Their browser was Netscape Navigator.

I used Seamonkey for a good few years, and if you get past the slightly stale look it's actually quite decent (or at least was 2 years ago when I last used it)
