I bet only doctors and a few scientists would even know there was a new strain of covid floating about, and for 99% of the country it would be irrelevant information.

Think about it: do people immediately change and wash their clothes after returning from the grocery store the way a surgeon changes into fresh scrubs before operating to prevent infection?
