The VP vote is separate from Pres. This is leftover from when 1st place got president, and the runner up got VP (this is partially what led to political parties). If the Electoral College vote for vice president results in a tie or deadlock, the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution requires the Senate to choose a vice president from among the top contenders.
