I’m pretty sure that the last election cycle was an anomaly with significantly more faithless electors.

The last one was indeed an anomaly.

Ten electors were faithless, three of which were invalidated due to faithless elector laws in their respective states. Hillary lost 5 votes, and Trump lost 2.

2016's election was the first in over a century in which multiple (more than one) elector attempted to change their vote. The last election to have more than one faithless elector was the election of 1912. It has happened 9 times since (only one faithless elector in each instance).
