Here is my testimony: I go to Planet Fitness (in NJ) to use the elliptical machine 3 to 4 times a week and do not wear a mask while actively working out. I wear a mask entering, walking to / from machines and leaving. Every other machine is closed and am always more than 6 feet from someone. Normally it is well over 10 feet to the next person.

Not wearing a mask while actively working out is permitted in NJ if “wearing a mask inhibits your health.” And that is what I told the PF staff, who by the way have been fantastic. NJ reopened the gyms Aug 1st and up until last week have had no issues with the staff or the patrons. Typically no one cares and keeps to themselves. The last two weeks I have been confronted two separate times: both were white, well over 60yrs; first was female second was male.

This all happens while I am in the second row of machines from the front walking path, sweating my ass off and wearing corded earbuds.

Phase one – Look of being appalled that someone is without a mask

Phase two – They make a second pass and give a disapproving eye glance. Then there are multiple rechecks by either walking by again or looking over shoulder. This is all being done while more than 20 feet+ away.

This is when it gets good…

Phase three – While walking they make eye contact and point at me, and then back to their face…signaling for me to put on a mask. At this point I simply keep to my workout and give them no recognition or feedback, and watch their frustration increase.

Phase four – They STOP and try to talk while wearing a mask and from 20 feet away. Again while I am working out and wearing earbuds. This is when I give them an innocent look and point to my ear that I can not hear them.

Phase five – They walk up to my machine to confront me. This is when I know the fish is on the hook and it is time to have some fun!!! Now they are pissed and yell at me to PUT YOUR MASK ON.

This is when they turn and leave, and I now have more energy for my workout. Can not wait for another fish.

Bottom Line: Screw them
