Our media is even more converged then US media. 3 companies(Bell, Rogers, Telus all three of these are telecom giants) own 80% of all media here. 8% is held by Corus, the remaining 10% is also converged. 2% is actual independent. The CBC is pure state owned media - it's a Crown Corporation aka owned by the Federal Government of Canada. The US has nothing like this.
Last year the government started bailing out media companies that are owned by these 4 companies. The remaining 10% started following the government line as well when they got a cut of the pie. So newspapers like National Post(owns 60% of all print news media inc. all SUN papers), Toronto Star(aka Red Star), Globe & Mail, etc.
There's really only a few media outlets that are actually not fully corporate owned here. To put in perspective, imagine that AT&T owned not only CNN, but ABC and CBS. They also own WAPO, USA Today. Their competitors make up the rest, and they happily work together.
