They weren't meaningless. They will there to be voting Republican electors in the electoral college, but ONLY IF a court finds that Biden did not win one of the states - i.e., these electors actually voted in time. Or perhaps if one of these states de-certifies its election results. Barring that, these people have no right to vote, and I don't think their votes even get put before the VP.
