Some are basically a virtual classroom where the kids happen to be at home. Others are parent is the teacher model, then you get all the way to unschooling. There's a lot of possibilities. Take that style spectrum and now cross it with a content spectrum- stem heavy, montessori, christian, classical... There's a homeschool plan for all. So choose what works for your family. If the kids need reading help, do that. If they need science, but you guys can't do it, then outsource that part.
Look into unschooling and a lot of articles in psychology today by Peter Gray (and books too).
Self directed education is another term to look into which might be more what you’re looking into. Its a way to free children from the dominated conditioning and less of regular school at home
I used K12 way back in the early 2000s, with my kids. Spent an hour a day doing their stuff to keep the state happy, spent the rest of the time giving my kids a real classical education.
Depends on your child’s needs and age. We
Put together a supplemental education to get her upto grade level in math. She has flourished. She is dyslexic and dyscalculia. So this opportunity has changed her life. She has learned about China, Africa, Abraham Lincoln, some new authors, creative writing. We ordered a health program that we are piecing together for different subjects and age. We invested about $600.00 total to get started for the year: which we could do many things from scratch but since it was our first year and she is older we needed some sort of guide to work worth. Probably the thing I miss most about Facebook is the groups for things like this.
As a homeschooler, honestly, the one that works for your kids. We tried a couple different ones and chose an eclectic combination.

Check out the Robinson curriculum. That gave me a foundation to which I could add other things as I wanted.

Curriculum wise I love Abeka. And mathhelp.com (I think that’s what it’s called) is great. So is Purple Math. Hope these help :)

K-12 is the most 'successful' in the US. Although that makes me hesitant. Probably run by CCP
