This literally left a Karen I know speechless.
-
Check basic arithmetic. Ask them if 100 people get sick, and 10 die, is that a 10% death rate? (10/100 = 0.10)
-
Show them the CDC website. (I did this by screensharing)
-
Open a calculator, and divide the total number of deaths, by the total number of cases. You'll get something close to 0.02.
"See, it has about a 2% death rate. That means a 98% survival rate."
- If you can, make the point that it's weighted heavily to elderly and sick people, and that for people under 70, it's 99%. Also, make the point that even this is exaggerated because doctors all over the country are complaining that heart attacks, cancer, and deaths from other causes are being attributed to COVID.
After months of arguing - I finally convinced my Karen friend.
That is alot of work, much easier to say "Karen, you really are a dumb bitch" and call it good. Or is that just me?
You forget another important question: Do all people who get infected become ill? That 2% death rate you mention goes down real fast when you count deaths/infections.
Good point. I will add that #4 to make the point that it's probably much better than 98%.
CDC has this information. See table 1: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/planning-scenarios.html
I've walked away from some. Tried to help others.
