Was in a small town in South Louisiana once and no shit, I saw what looked like a group of 8 year olds all carrying .410 shotguns.
I was unloading a boat and asked them what they were hunting and they said they were all going to blast gar from the top of a bridge to see who could hit one the furthest away.
Do not fuck with people from the south. Shooting is baked in from birth down here.
I don't agree that the two surviving criminals should be charged with murder. I believe you should only be charged for crimes you committed. They did not murder.
Looks like they're using action = premeditation reasoning, that they knowingly led people to their death. Be interesting to read the incident report on it.
Yes, the gar is a nasty fish. They destroy spinner baits and buzz baits too. Not as bad as mudfish, but still can wreak havoc.
That being said, the backstrap from a gar is some of the finest meat on earth. I have a friend who retired as a professional chef somewhere in a ritzy part of Colorado. He was visiting and we had a conversation about it while gator hunting one evening. We shot a few gar and carried them home, and he prepared them properly. Holy hell it was good. I'm not sure that I could replicate it, but it sure threw me a curve ball.
This is how my summers, growing up, in the Atchafalaya Basin were! Hahaha! Also, have a map if you are on a boat in the Basin. One wrong turn and we had two of my uncles get lost (before anyone heard about GPS) and they found them 3 days later 60 miles away (someone towed them and their boat back to hometown!). Fun times.
Truth. I'm not even from a "rural" area. I've lived in suburbs my whole life and learned to shoot around age 10. Was firing fully automatic weapons before I even had a learner's permit to drive. Full auto of course had been banned by that time but my great uncle still owned a Chinese made AK he brought back from Vietnam and my grandmother of all people owned a Thompson SMG. They don't own them anymore though :(
Armed home invasion in Louisiana. That sounds like a particularly low IQ game.

Based.

Felony murder rule. If you commit a felony and as a result of you committing a felony someone dies you are guilty of murder.
Don’t like it? Don’t commit a felony.
Felony around and find out.
Yes they did. Put those youths in harms way.

Southerner, can confirm. Shot my 1st 12 gauge when I was 7 and it almost knocked me on my butt.
Kills on one end, wounds on the other.
You guys should try a 10g side by side if you think a 12g has some punch.
12 gauge shooting 1 oz slugs.... brutal... on both ends.
We truly are rediscovering our brotherhood these days, aren't we?
Same story here, different gun. Dads 44mag. And it did knock me on my butt.
Gar are pretty much only good for target practice. Sounds like a fun morning!
What are the exactly? Some type of bird?
Gar fish (alligator far)
They look like a prehistoric monster fish with sharp teeth.
The kids were on top of a bridge shooting down killing a bunch of them right at dusk. I suspect the big light over the bridge drew the fish in.

A fish. Also called alligator gar. Pretty ugly and taste terrible to boot. (Not even Louisiana boys'll eat em!)
Some kind of fish. Never saw one, but, iirc, they are the ugliest fish you could ever see.
Trash fish, but they look awesome and fight like hell. I use to bow hunt them in the Kansas river.

Have to wonder over the generations, how many uncles went out and didn't make it back.
A lot from what I am told.

I live 10 minutes west. It was drug related. However, he still did a good job killing 2 and wounding the others.
Yep, best to have your affairs in order first.
