We're actually becoming a dystopian oligarchic tyranny.

We spent the last two centuries as a constitutional republic that was progressively getting more and more democratic, until a tiny minority did away with both democratic and republican principles of government, keeping only the illusion of voting (democratic) and the bare bones of the (republican) structure of government the Founders set up.
