I'm gonna get hate for this but I was academia and am fine with people with doctorates being called doctors.
That being said, I also consider a doctoral degree in education to be one of lowest and most meaningless doctoral degrees one can get.
No offence to anyone here with one because it can get you in the right doors. It just means so much less than, say, a science degree.
Insisting that people in daily life address you as 'Doctor' when you are not a medical doctor, just an academic degree Dr. is a thing pompous self important assholes do, and she for one most definitely does it in a way that falsely implies she is an actual medical doctor which is fraudulent. Among other academics, in a University setting, fine - but not in conversations with lay people outside those specific settings.

My kids' school has a superintendent that is snotty about insisting people call her 'doctor', and she pulled that on me one day when I picked them up in the office at school to go someplace before the school day ended - 'Excuse me! It's DOCTOR deblippity blip!" So I replied with ok, doctor blippity blip, you can also address me as DOCTOR lastname, since I also have a doctorate degree'. I then looked around the office at the other couple teachers etc. there and said to them, 'just her, you all can call me Ed or Mr. lastname, I don't really care'.
