The confederacy was based. Northern white and Southern white were fundamentally different peoples who had culturally diverged for 100+ years. In the context of Northerners coming to dominate all three branches of federal government and expanding the power of the federal government outside the bounds of the constitution, and in the context of European Romantic Nationalism of the 1850s, new borders with self-determination made perfect sense.
First remove the confederacy from history... then the civil war altogether...
