I know they don't teach American history anymore... but come on, folks. Look up why the Republican Party was founded.
Abolition of slavery was the first and most important issue. Every single person who joined the Republican Party and built it up from nothing was an abolitionist, or wanted to keep slavery out of the North and West, and to make it increasingly rare in the South.
And Abraham Lincoln was not just some guy who joined the Republican Party and happened to get picked as their candidate. Look up the Lincoln/Douglas debates, when Lincoln explained in detail all the different ways that slavery was a horrible idea.
Now, not every Republican expected that they'd be able to free any slaves or end slavery in their lifetimes. (You can compare it to the pro-life movement today.) But they were all trying to make it happen.
