The nature of God as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is eternal and has no beginning (yeah, try comprehending THAT fully, being a creature of time). And that DID inform Jesus' actions on earth. He and the Father operated as one. What Jesus DID accomplish was a very public ministry of repentance in faith, to the ends of His crucifixion on the cross, ultimately paving the way for all of humanity (through repentance and faith in Jesus) to have the same eternal "oneness" relationship with God that Jesus demonstrated He has.
We cannot become the Holy Spirit, rather, we become obedient to the Holy Spirit and thereby the will of God. The purpose is to bring us into relationship with God, similar to the relationship of the Holy Trinity. Jesus didn't "become" the Father, though through absolute obedience to the Father, He was able to say "I and the Father are one."
