I think Cruz was headed for a Kennedy mistake. JFK made deals with the corrupt establishment to get in power to destroy the corrupt establishment but as a result he stirred up the vipers nest while knee deep in snakes and got hit for it. Cruz tried to lie his way into power and use donations from disreputable businesses to fund his way in but Trump's victory over him taught him that he didn't need to play their dirty games to win and so he reconciled with Trump

Of course he might just have left it vague like that as he knows if he threw him under the bus too many of his donors would walk out on him right then and there.
