Aerosol particles are in the nanometer range. The 1% transmission reduction is for aerosols. Aerosols stay in the air for up to 8 hours with no ventilation. Asymptomatic spread is probably via aerosols, and are generated by talking and breathing.
Droplet spread may be reduced 50% by masks. So coughing twice with a mask is the similar to coughing once without a mask. But that's with perfect fit.
I don't get hung up on the aerosol or whatever BS personally.
I wouldn't lick some sick diseased guy's spit or snot, and if the mask blocks stuff like that from getting on things I touch, it's a bonus. Hand washing is cool and all but realistically I can't wash my hands after I touch every single thing.
