Twitter is a perfect example of this. A tiny, TINY amount of people are vocal on twitter. It gives the appearance of a much larger amount of people. Its bullshit.
Mainstream society is still thoroughly against it though which is why it's used as blackmail. Support from the fringe left wouldn't be enough to save them from prison and public disgrace.
