There is a scene in the book where the main protagonist is held captive and the government keeps showing him a photograph of someone holding up four fingers. They keep asking him how many fingers he sees. He responds, "four," and then is tortured. They're trying to get him to say there are five fingers. As soon as he acknowledges that the government gets to dictate the truth the torture stops.
To make my reference even more obscure there was an episode of Star Trek TNG that was paying an homage to 1984 where Picard is captured by an alien and tortured. They used lights in stead of fingers.

Ohhhh now I got ya. The lights reference threw me but yeah I’ve read 1984 at least three times and the ending of the skit is based on 1984. I originally had “he loved big brother” in the description. Thank you though and yes I’m holding the line here in LA truly feeling our pal Winston!
