He doesn't write with an ending in mind is why, he just starts and sees what happens. Which is a terrible way to write IMO, you need a cogent beginning, middle, and end in mind so that it makes sense and builds up.
That would explain it. I agree that you should have at least some idea of an ending before writing a story, otherwise risk disaster, which is what happened with so many of King's story endings.
