How about we ask Elon to further develop the protocol for Starlink to supersede IP (and I mean V4 AND V6).
Then patent the protocol, but license it out FOC to vetted network router manufacturers (with serious security strings!)
Then roll out this new protocol as the routing std for the 'new' core internet, still supporting IPV4/6 (as a client sub-protocol).
As part of this it could have compartmented networks for Government/corporate/military networks etc/
Its Mesh Time
No reason not to build your own Internet.
And you can do it with stuff you have laying around the house.

that's kind of missing the point here.....
No I get your point.
I started hacking around with the internet back in 1975 at MIT when it had around 100 nodes.
You make good points and I have no disagreements.
But if you know the name Paul Baran I am approaching it from his point of view, redundancy and alternatives are good.
One minor quibble I might have is about routers. They are just specialized computers.
Back in 1969 when the first one was built it was called an Interface Message Processor. It was needed to make the concept of a connected network of computers work.
But it presents a large attack surface. With specialized software a router's functions can be distributed and be a lot harder to disrupt and take over.
Don't disagree, we are arguing around different layers of the model...
The main issue with the internet today is around BGP etc, and being blunt, the guys that came up with it never imagined just how bad actors would go about abusing the internet, and that's before we get to DNS hacks, etc etc etc..
The sooner it gets away from IP anything the better, I was always a big fan of ATM, but it never really caught on, marketing man went IP
Nah let's just defeat communism in the minds of the masses like our granddaddies did.
....and build the new internet.
I like my martini's shaken AND stirred.
