I am catholic and can assure you that the pope's status as a heretic is all but certain.

How hard is it for the pope to just echo the same teachings the church has always taught?

It is hard. A true Catholic would need to condemn fake elections, decry abortion as demonic, crush the pro-contraception lies, and live a chaste life.

The issue is that the college of cardinals didn't see any of those things as being required for the papacy... likely because they are also corrupted.

At least five decades, probably more like 8, in the modern era. It was better when it was just rival Italian families fighting over money. Now it’s serious communism, and all that goes with it.
