"A Woman in Berlin" is about the end of WWII and how all the Soviet soldiers were raping everyone in occupied Berlin. The only women who escaped were hidden in attics and basements for extended periods. If you read about the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans, they used to demand a child tax in every village every year. People would be required to bring their children to the town square and the Islamists would take a certain percentage of children back to Istanbul every year for good to do horrible things to. People used to amputate limbs from their children so they wouldn't be taken. Not to get too grim, but the human condition is not a pleasant thing. I fear we are taking steps in that direction.
