if you pose that to them, they'll just "claim" it's because they mask and social distance (even though that's a bullshit answer)

Because masks are not 100% effective. And in my area, only about half of the people are wearing any mask, and many that are are just using cotton bandanas which are the least effective form of mask. You would need at least 80% of people wearing effective masks to see the spread slow down significantly.
