I'm interested in a factual and realistic analysis on whether or not President Trump has the political capital to pardon Assange, and whether or not it's a wise idea. I'm looking for reasoning that is not based in emotion, please. I "feel" the same way as you do. I'm a parent, it's unconscionable that Julian has young children who--correct me if I'm wrong--have never even been able to meet him in person? One is a six-year-old?

7

If Assange wanted a pardon, why not reveal Rich was the informant and provide the proof. It would have changed everything for Trump.

Doesn't matter either way. If he gets re-elected he isn't going to run for office again...well unless 3 terms ;)

bill_in_texas 18 points ago +18 / -0

If we finally get courts to examine and confirm the massive fraud in the Dominion states, so much that the election results are either overturned, or hopelessly conflicted have to be thrown out, then pardoning Assange won't even make the front section of the paper.

2
BloodyWolf 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah. It isn't enough to barely earn a victory. You need to replace the disloyal element, and punish people. I am still amazed that so many people (not counting the fraudulent ones) actually voted for Biden, an awful candidate. Must be more of the curse of 2020.

7
deleted 7 points ago +7 / -0

BloodyWolf -1 points ago +3 / -4

Unfortunately, what really matters is whether or not Trump has the guts to call a massive Patriot rally, and then use it to stage a coup. Unfortunately, I don't think he has it in him.

And as an aside, I am also a bit tired on the excessive emphasis on "optics". The partisans don't care.

4
rupok2 4 points ago +4 / -0

Valid concern. I think Trump creates political capital by pardoning Assange. I would also pardon Snowden.

11
sir_rockness 11 points ago +11 / -0

I honestly don't understand the Snowden h8 on this site...

This guy put his life on the line to share NSA abuses... I don't care if he doesn't like Trump he's a Saint as far as I'm concerned and he was way ahead of the curve....

2
TexasJack 2 points ago +2 / -0

People are misinformed about what he did, how he did it and the effects of his actions.

8
wolfpack28 8 points ago +9 / -1

Snowden doesn't want Trump to pardon him.

And Snowden hates Trump. He may have even said he would refuse a Trump pardon.

14
Hoshi 14 points ago +14 / -0

Snowden can stay in Russia. At least he isn't in jail and hasn't been stuck in a embassy for years.

5
Tokyo20DrinkingGame 5 points ago +5 / -0

Snowden is doing alright, honestly. He knew the gravity of the situation, what it meant, and he still had the balls to do it. He's got a pretty decent life in Russia.

Snowden has been dragged through years of illegal confinement (first in the embassy, now in British jails) based on some extremely flimsy readings of the law. Even though I don't agree with some of his methods of acquiring and releasing information, he is a journalist and should be protected as such.

10
deleted 10 points ago +10 / -0
3
wolfpack28 3 points ago +3 / -0

I guess I admit, I don't know much about the relationship between Snowden and Trump. The interview he did a year ago, which I only saw part of, it didn't appear he had anything nice to say about Trump.

If Snowden could be trusted, could he be an asset for a reformed intelligence apparatus?

Also, the deep state hates him so much that even if Trump were to pardon him right now, I don't think that would matter much to Snowden unless he was convinced Trump was going to remain in power. I don't think a Trump pardon would protect him from the deep state and Harris.

It wouldn't change much for him in the short term.

Assange is different. He's not in the US and has no interest in coming to the US. Pardoning him relieves the international pressure, which has been the biggest thorn in his ass.

4
80960KA 4 points ago +4 / -0

Snowden is a spook, fuck him.

2
TexasJack 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don't believe acceptance is required, thought that seems to be the most recent word from the courts. The Constitution grants the pardon power to the President without check or limitation (other than that it can't be used to stop impeachment). My view is that no one, not even the person being pardoned, has any ability to diminish that power.

1
deleted 1 point ago +1 / -0

CannonballJunior 5 points ago +5 / -0

I think Trump creates political capital by pardoning Assange.

While that's not the reason he should pardon Trump, your thought is very likely correct, as it creates new & additional grassroots appreciation for Trump which could be politically useful for fighting the 2020 election steal, or for a 2024 White House run.

4
Doth 4 points ago +4 / -0

I think Trump creates political capital by pardoning Assange.

That is an interesting take, I hadn't looked at it that way. Thanks! Still hoping to hear from people who "know" but it's nice to have a positive perspective.

12
christianknight 12 points ago +13 / -1

The only people who would hate Assange are deep state agents and their low IQ followers. Think Bush supporters.

4
Doth 4 points ago +5 / -1

I agree with that, but when I consider that Romney and McConnell are part of our "senate majority" it does not comfort me

4
RussianAgent13 4 points ago +4 / -0

Do you have have factual evidence or reason to believe that Trump needs more political capital, that pardoning Assange would be bad optics, or that bad optics right now over this particular issue would hurt his second term?

I'm not trying to be snarky, your perception of the current status is just a complete 180 from mine and I'm trying to see where you're coming from.

6

1
Doth 1 point ago +1 / -0

No, I'm trying to get more information from people who understand the legal and political realities at play here and are able to separate them from fee-fees.

2
RussianAgent13 2 points ago +2 / -0

But why are you claiming this has anything to do with "fee-fees"? It makes no sense from a political, logical, or justice argument to NOT pardon Assange. I just assumed you must have a different perspective or you wouldn't even think otherwise.

I know some people were yelling he's a traitor who revealed our state secrets and must be punished, but most of them are Democrats and their arguments seem to be based on emotion, and they won't give Trump any political capital in the first place.

A lot of military guys don't want to pardon Snowden for sure, but the same arguments wouldn't apply to Assange.

2
Doth 2 points ago +2 / -0

Nah, so I admit I am more than just a little bit tipsy right now, but I'm slowing down to fix my typos so give me some patience.

I am just looking for anyone that understands any real consequences or costs incurred by delivering this pardon. I want to see Assange pardoned, and personally think he should have been pardoned in 2017. But he wasn't, and there's probably a reason for that. So the info I'm seeking would, in theory, go to that explanation.

One guy gave a pretty good response explaining how the leftists thinking Biden has won would not have a good reason to attack Trump for pardoning Assange, since they already "avenged" Hillary by voting him out.

4

FWIW, thats what I've heard from someone within the gov- that what Assange leaked was merely mildly embarrassing diplomatic stuff, and not anywhere near the worst stuff he actually had, causing the gov to internally label him a terrorist. The 2016 leaks were the closest they came to revealing what they were really up to.

Highjacking the second highest comment to say, while I tend to agree, I'm very curious to see what Project Veritas is dropping today. If it's a phone call that implies that Julian was on friendly terms (in cahoots) with Clinton, he may have just been controlled opposition this whole time. Might want to hold off until the end of this week for that pardon.

25
Wtf_socialismreally 25 points ago +25 / -0

That's very inconvenient controlled opposition then, since he basically cost her the election

3

2

This would be the last possibility, since, if for no reason, Julian Assange has always hated the Clintons, since at least 2010, if not before.

1
Herecomedatpresident 1 point ago +1 / -0

It is going to take A LOT to convince me that he was in cahoots with Clinton. He HATES her and pointed out many things in the wiki leaks dumps that people didn't even notice that he felt were the most important things about the dumps. For one thing he thought she was completely responsible for the mass immigration and refugee crisis from northern Africa into Europe.

8
nakedjay 8 points ago +11 / -3

Snowden was a CIA plant sent to damage the NSA. Here's why:

Snowden was a former CIA contractor (Sys Admin). https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/edward-snowden-interview/who-edward-snowden-man-who-spilled-nsas-secrets-n114861

Snowden only attacked the NSA. He had access and knowledge of CIA's attacks on privacy and did not release any of their information or tools. CIA tools that we now know about because Wikileaks got their hands on them and released it all. Backdoors to all kinds of systems. CIA can spy on US citizens, they just do it through other avenues by using FISA courts to target people in contact with US citizens or by using partners in Five Eyes.

The CIA spied on the Senate and got away with it. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/12/a-brief-history-of-the-cias-unpunished-spying-on-the-senate/384003/

Snowden was only concerned with the NSA but specifically ignored the shady shit that the CIA was doing. That's quite telling.

8
ontothefuture 8 points ago +9 / -1

He was asked about pardoning Snowden a few months ago and said he would look into it.

Pardon Snowden instead. Julian does not seem to have our interests at heart.

YOu have it completely backwards

But if you wanted to basically not play favorites between the deepstate (cia) and the white hat patriots in the NSA, you'd just pardon them both, and President Trump should do exactly that.

He should also pardon "reality winner" because someone convinced her that her "sacrifice" was for the better of the country. They were wrong, and they foooled her, and she was a useless idiot in all of this

And there should be an unlimited pardon for Chelsea (Bradley) Manning for all matters related to the original incident and ANY matter that followed it.

Bradley Manning was guilty of embarrassing the US military by exposing that they killed civilians. That's a true whistleblower. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand the situation or they are a deepstate hench shill that is screeching 'commie', 'traitor' and not getting how in America we believe in transparency and accountability, not coverups of crimes and being a dick online and trying hard to screw up poeple's understanding of reality

We need to do a VASTLY better job of protecting whistleblowers, even if you don't like that the crime they exposed harms your political side....we need to get beyond that. If a Trump supporter diddled a little girl, WE NEED TO KNOW and hold them accountable. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. NO ONE

I don't care how he votes, he released information that Americans needed to see.

I don't care. He should not be charged for releasing information that was very important to all Americans. It sets a bad precedent. The next whistleblower will keep quiet.

If Trump publicly announces (or even quietly, these people aren't stupid - they know what they're doing) he's going to pardon Julian Assange; the bucktooth crumpet fucks will not release him for extradition to the United States. They've been deliberately delaying his trial to decide this till after the election- I believe, with the hope being Trump loses. Because we certainly know what China Biden will do with our poor Wizard..

Parden Snowden and Assange, IMO. The people need to know that it is possible to do the right thing and expose the treachery of the swamp government and land on your feet.

I’m not as all in on Assange’s “hero” status as some are but it is total bullshit that Bradley Manning leaked all that stuff to him and he was just the publisher and he’s the won whose life is in danger meanwhile now “Chelsea” Manning gets a pardon and is off the hook for leaking the intelligence just because he transitioned to a woman and Barry wanted to be progressive in pardoning a “trans” person.

I am too and I'm american

you have to know this though, that no matter what you think, Australia isn't australia.

it's the UK. It's a commonwealth realm which means that ultimatey Queen Elizabeth II has the controlling interest in this matter

(it's possible the USA is also...we just don't know it. Dig into the wikipedia on commonwealth realm and FIVE EYES)

Question; if section 230 protects websites from liability for user generated content then why is Julian Assange being pursued for charges?

15
deleted 15 points ago +16 / -1
1
alcowiggles 1 point ago +1 / -0

Technically he's being prosecuted because he ASKED for classified information to be passed to him.

4
Chick-fill-eh 4 points ago +4 / -0

Why do you think that matters? He shit in the elites cheerios, and such a crime will not go unpunished.

He failed in his chain of custody by having a subvert in his midst

Guess Assange learnt the hard way there's no honor among thieves

Because they do not claim to be a platform, they scrupulously edit and fact check before publication. 230 protects a service that users can post to without any intervention (aside from minor content moderation). Clearly big tech has abused the content moderation allowance, but there is no doubt that 230 never would protect a site like wikileaks that has to manually approve all content before it gets posted.

FREE ASSANGE!

5
lifeisahologram 5 points ago +5 / -0

I hope Assange is pardoned either way, but I really wish he gave up his DNC source.

I get why he doesn’t want to, but I just feel this situation is a million times more different. It wasn’t a situation where the source (well assuming Seth Rich then sources family) can just go on living life normally again, and not revealing the source protects that.

Quite literally protecting the source here protects the evil doers in the world by protecting their crimes and shielding them and directly contributes to the downfall of world civilization because those very diets are trying to subvert and destroy the United States.

Not some small time corpo deal or whatever where the consequences are in a vacuum.
