No, but the media did make it hard with slandering and having it ingrained in the education system that it is bad.
Basically a Psyops that involve Big Tech, Deep State, Justice system, and Local officials & police[depends on the Totem pole].
There could be several reasons but here is both a bad reason and a good reason:
It makes it harder to not only track, but shutdown any attempts from the 'tentacles'. They then have time to prepare and spread the word of everything going active. [Good]
They do it because they are scared. It is the labeling and pandering ingrained over the last 3-4 decades of brainwashing the masses. [Bad]
That about sums it up for 2 reasons right there to give an idea just depends on the groups.
Because there is more to being prepared than LARPing in the woods every weekend pretending you and your buddies are Seal Team 6. Would you join a local kickball league if you were looking for a ham radio club? Now imagine the kickballers coming to the radio club meetings asking why we're not playing kickball. Different groups with different goals and mindsets.
Because states have laws that prohibit and impede Patriots from militia and paramilitary anything so that's why these groups stay black and why those you mentioned distance themselves.
You have to join up with Patriot groups to know what's going on but information is never shared with the general public. Patriots are organized and organizing though.
As long as the feds don't try to come to the cookout when SHTF and I meet up with my group, I'm not worried about them. They can do as they please but it's worthless efforts on their parts - having connections and plans with others whether or not the feds know doesn't matter, they must abide by the constitution just as we do, and that includes the right to form coalitions/malitias. I've definitely seen some really 'lame' malitias, but the most important thing is that they won't be lame when SHTF and our hand is forced. The constitution is pretty 'radical' in some ways, and I'll never advocate violence but in rare events it is justified. As long as we follow the righteous path, I'd worry about anyone who tries to stop that.

Seems like a bit of a preventative measure. Being shut down before having the ability to leap into action would really suck balls.
