As someone who sees the writing on the wall of where we may be heading relatively soon but did not have the means to prepare in the time leading up to now, what can I realistically do? If shit does start hitting the fan quickly I want to know what I can do to both keep my family and myself safe while doing what I can to support the cause if possible.
My family currently lives in what is now a fairly blue area of a purple state. Also fuck governor Roy Cooper. No one in my family currently owns any firearms or has any significant experience with them. I've wanted to own a firearm for protection purposes for awhile now but only very recently have been put into a position where I could even have the income to purchase one. I have no idea of how to go about purchasing a firearm within my state of North Carolina. Outside of very close friends who are all pretty conservative, I'm not part of any local conservative group nor do I know if there even is one in or close the the area I live in.
I'm trying to prepare for the worst in case shit does go down now that I can, but I feel that it may be too late. Any genuine advice given where I am currently at with each of these issues would greatly appreciated.

West NC is the mountains, middle has Ft. Bragg,coast has Camp Lejeune. I’m sure you got people who would be sympathetic somewhere near you.
Easiest place to start being useful is to get your voice heard by your representatives. Congress people, senators, governor, etc. Don’t discount then if they are libs... if we have enough people confronting them then they will at least be aware that we aren’t going down calmly.
Next, get involved. Even if it’s just you sharing links to Antrim county audit results on social media or something. Be part of the guerilla movement to spread the real news. Welcome to the American samizdat.
Start building a network. Maybe it’s just friends and family... maybe your church. Doesn’t matter but have a network. If shit hits the fan no-one person will be ready. The strength of the wolf is the pack not his fangs.
And to whatever extent possible learn how to handle a firearm. How to use cover/concealment. Principles of maneuvering etc. Hopefully, this will be a Cold War but if not then these might buy you enough time for to reach a larger organized force.

Well, what do you think will go down? Chances are you can just sit at home and play videos games without having to worry about doing anything if you want.
Buy a shotgun or pistol for home defense. I'm not familiar with your state laws but getting a gun should be simple unless you're a felon. Bring ID and be prepared to fill in paper work and wait. If you're thinking of SHTF situation that'll be different...

I'd get a shotgun if you plan to use it for home defense. Much less expensive to buy and you can pick them up almost anywhere from your neighbors or other places without having to register. Ammo for this is fairly cheap for target rounds and very plentiful right now.
Even if shit doesn't hit the fan, the world's food production has been at a stand still for pretty much the whole year. There will probably be food shortages and what is available will be expensive. Buy up as much as you can now. Fill every available cupboard.
Food/water is the main thing. If anything happens (worst case scenario) social media companies/media like CNN will go down for a few days to a week or so i think. If things get horribly bad, I expect to see military in the street to deal with BLM/antifa but I think that will be major blue cities like Portland. Wouldn't hurt to grab a shotgun if you need to carry something in your vehicle or are using it for home use. They are pretty cheap for a good one and ammo is plentiful where most handgun ammo is completely gone right now. Almost any 12 guage is a good place to start. One of my favorites is a single shot that probably cost less that $100.
