You don't need a pile of ammo. Ever read the essay about "What Good Can A handgun Do Against An Army? Back in the day the training told us a pistol was to get a shotgun, etc. Hell, Afghanistan for 20 years....farmers against the Biggest Baddest Army on Earth, and we won and won and won until we left
So, a pile of ammo is not neccessary...all you need is enough to get a particular job done.
Look up liberator pistols. That's literally their purpose. Cheap, crappy, low round count pistols that were mass produced and dropped in countries being occupied by Germany during WWII. Then idea was you'd wait until a Nazi was off on his own (taking a piss, puking after drining with his buddies, etc) and you'd execute him and steal his gun instead. As long as you pick the time and place, the fact that your weapon sucks really doesn't matter so much. You'll be walking away with theirs instead.
There's a reason a lot of vets tend to have a stockpile of a ton of surplus rifles and ammo.....It's not because they get tired of one ar-15 and want to dust off another.
This is why I have recently took up long range shooting and got a proper bolt gun and optic. I want to make it so my enemy wont be safe even a thousand yards away.
If you think about it, a modern pistol, even a Hi-Point, is more effective in just about every way than a black powder musket or even rifle. Speed, accuracy, range, often even energy delivered to the target.
A modern rifle is of course even better, but a mere pistol is nothing to sneeze at compared to what people were fighting wars with 120 years ago.
When I was putting serious miles on my bike, I always had a stashed BP pistol (primitive firearm required little or no licensing across the country at-the-time) inside my rear fender. Vacuum-sealed and ready to go.
Actually, it was more reliable than a stock Hi-stovepipe-Point ...hehehe.

Implying you'd get one from a dead body?
you only need a single shot to upgrade.
Jokes on you, I got homemade Astartes Armour 😅
Spez... you guys ever see how devastating homemade shotguns (black pipe) are in el Salvador ?

So.. Highpoints?
Those pistols if you can find one are worth a ton. Its a single shot .45 ACP
Wow that's really interesting.. I never knew that was a thing.
This is quite the entertaining conversation.
No, that people will be handing them out.

I only have two hands.
The Soviets used to tell unarmed troops to pick up the rifles and ammunition from fallen soldiers--they had more people than guns.
Not entirely true but very clever
But a pile of ammo won't hurt
Ammo is money in hard times.
A pile of spaghetti would be better! Preferably with big bouncy meatballs and tasty gravy!
Well that's another viewpoint.
Yeah, us old farts are full of wisdom upon occasion
Is that you Barr?
I was thinking Papyrus.
Spaghetti... meatballs... gravy.
Am I drunk? Are you drunk? What's going on with this gravy on spaghetti now?
...you're talking about jizz, aren't you?
If you were raised in a paisan household, gravy is (spaghetti) sauce ...it's what gram and gramps and all of the great aunts and such called it.
make sure you leave a sign telling unauthorized users to beware. Or don't. I won't.
Thank you for linking this for me again. It's been a long time since I last saw it.

Yup, when the enemy is mustering , you can disable their transportation from hundreds of yards away. Among other things.
What caliber if I may ask? I know the military uses the 308 on their M40 rifles, but are they reliable to use at a 1000 yards?
I have a 7.62x51 but recently got a 6.5cm because I'm a hipster.

Cap and ball revolver is still not-a-gun in most states as far as I know.
Yes, but it used to be more. I rode across the country unfettered at one time.
