I’ve been dying to write about this.

America has actually mirrored the rise of Rome in many ways.

ROMAN REPUBLIC

  1. Lucius Tarquinius Superbus Rex

    |_ King of Rome (535 BC - 509 BC)

    |_ Unpopular King that was overthrown in a Republican Revolution

  2. Lucius Junius Brutus

    |_ Consul (509 BC - 509 BC)

    |_ Symbolic Leader of the Revolution

    |_ One of the first two executives of the Republic

  3. Overthrow of the Roman Monarchy (509 BC)

  4. Battle of the Allia (390 BC)

    |_ Humiliating defeat that resulted in the capital burning

  5. Wars of Hegemony [Rise as Sole Western Power]

    |_ Pyrrhic War (280 BC - 275 BC) [Recognized as Great Power by World]

    |_ First Punic War (264 BC - 241 BC)

    |_ Second Punic War (218 BC - 201 BC)

    |_ First Macedonian War (214 BC - 205 BC)

    |_ Second Macedonian War (200 BC - 197 BC)

    |_ Roman-Seleucid War (192 BC - 188 BC)

    |_ Third Macedonian War (171 BC - 168 BC)

    |_ Fourth Macedonian War (150 BC - 148 BC)

    |_ Third Punic War (149 BC - 146 BC) [Western Hegemony Achieved]

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

  1. King George III

    |_ King of Great Britain (1760 - 1776)

    |_ Unpopular King that was overthrown in a Republican Revolution

  2. George Washington

    |_ President (1789 - 1797)

    |_ Symbolic Leader of the Revolution

    |_ First executive of the Republic

  3. American Revolution (1776)

  4. Battle of Bladensburg (1814)

    |_ Humiliating defeat that resulted in the capital burning

  5. Wars of Hegemony [Rise as Sole Western Power]

    |_ Spanish-American War (1898 - 1898) [Recognized as Great Power by World]

    |_ World War I (1917 - 1918)

    |_ World War II (1941 - 1945)

    |_ Cold War (1947 - 1991) [Western Hegemony Achieved]

POTENTIAL SIMILARITIES

  1. Civil War

    |_ Latin War (340 BC - 338 BC) [Possibly a Civil War]

    |_ American Civil War (1861 - 1865)

I don’t think we have had a Sulla yet.

Besides Sulla was a member of the Optimates, the Ancient Roman Swamp, he was not a friend of the people.

If Trump fails because he wished to follow the law to the letter then he is our Tiberius Gracchus, if Trump succeeds because he essentially declares himself a de facto dictator then he is our Julius Caesar.

The Optimates were the traditionalists and conservatives as well as the elite. Sulla put in a lot of conservative reforms. You can't map modern parties straight onto the Optimates and Populares.
