Professor says “in Chinese cultures, women often walk a certain number of steps behind their husbands. This is not a sign of disrespect, actually women in these cultures are more respected than in the US.” She is usually on mute. I yelled up to her “that’s a fucking lie, sounds like some complete CCP shill bullshit to me.” 10 seconds later I said “Babe, will you make sure to walk 8 steps behind me, it isn’t a dominance thing.” Teacher says “are you doing OK {girlfriends name}?” Kek.

I lived in China in 2009. This is absolute bullshit. I've seen filipino women do this, although rare. Never seen a Chinese woman do this, ever.
I think it's more a historical cultural thing. It used to be a thing in Japan prior to world War 2, but it has pretty much phased out in the reconstruction period
I've seen it with Indian wives (subcontinent, not our peeps). Older couples. Doubt younger, particularly educated women will go for that b.s.
