I worked for one of the mid sized aerospace company that also designed some parts on military planes. They had to shut down the network because China infiltrated and most likely stole all the data. They were a global company and did have offices in China. I also did audits of IT - one of the audits I did found that logging was turned off on the routers for the China region. If you get into one of those you can capture all unencrypted data on the network. Most traffic wasn’t encrypted back then.
