Solarwind is a performance monitoring company. They have a number of products. One of the products they recently acquired is Orion, which is what got hacked.
To monitor a server you need to install an agent on it that will send metrics back to the main service, the dashboard. Technically, the agent is a backdoor, the good kind, IF configured and locked down properly. Exploit it and it becomes the bad kind, essentially giving you keys to the kingdom.

I'll give you an ELI15. Basically, Solarwinds is a company that makes network security equipment used by a ton of companies and the government. Some of this equipment had a vulnerability in it (possibly an intentional backdoor) that has been discovered and apparently abused by a nation state according to CISA, FBI, and others. The feds discovered it first in the Treasury department, but it could affect a lot more, including all branches of the military. They don't know how much has been affected, but calling it a digital Pearl Harbor would not be far off from what I am hearing. Cyber attack by a foreign power against the government of the United States would be an act of war.
