Earlier in 1776 Thomas Paine’s Common Sense had inspired many Americans to support a declaration of independence from Great Britain. After the retreat across New Jersey in 1776, Washington demanded Common Sense be printed and passed out in camp.
Paine wrote another series of papers called The American Crisis. Paine's words were a rallying cry, meant to inspire courage in men whose spirits had been dulled by war. To encourage and rally his troops at Valley Forge, Washington read Thomas Paine’s ringing words aloud:
“The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”
After the winter the American Army and Minutemen Militias would later go on the offensive to outsmart and outflank the British to take back towns, though taking heavy casualties they would ultimately win the pushes against the British. For the next 5 years.
There are many lessons to be learned from the history of Patriots.
American, Australian, Canadian, Irish, Scots, Native tribes, even the British all played a role in developing the philosophic ideas of human rights to bring about Freedom, Liberty and Justice in the New World.
