We know this well in CA. Who we "vote" for is predetermined. This is not good for our Republic because it creates distrust in our institutions, which leads to authoritarian, conservative strongmen--as history repeats itself.
I would like to suggest that these figures we bemoan, and may have their own private faults, are more the responses that nature produces to corrupt systems, than the actual corrupters, like they are depicted. In other words, maybe CA could also use a conservative strongman, although hopefully a humane one.
