There's a bunch of confused weebs in this thread. I don't even know FF that well and I know it's Aerith. It was meant to be Aerith. However Japanese doesn't have a "th" symbol in hiragana or katakana, so when translating it at first the localization misread it as Aeris. But they had it fixed for a long time since then. People in Japan have a hard time pronouncing "th" as a result of seldom use, but regardless the creator named her Aerith.
